Electronics During Pregnancy Linked to Asthma in Kids?

allergy patient questionnaire

A recent study has suggested there may be a link between exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) during pregnancy and childhood  asthma (time.com).

We’ll probably be hearing quite a bit about this one on the news for the next few days. It certainly has a provocative title and  findings,  although this is the first study of its kind  and will need to be replicated by future studies to ensure the findings are truly  accurate and valid.  In the meanwhile, we must keep in mind that this study merely suggests there may be an association between  high levels of EMFs and  childhood asthma;  it is not proof of cause and effect. Over the past 20 years we have learned that asthma is  the culmination of many complex genetic and external factors and is not simply due to one environmental stimulus.

EMFs are nearly impossible to avoid. Everything from vacuum cleaners to cars and water pipes emit various levels.  The Earth has its own magnetic fields with varying geological hot spots. If you are pregnant and concerned about these findings, here are a few tips that may lessen the baby’s exposure to EMFs:

  • Do not stand directly in front of microwave while it is running
  • Hold hair dryers far away from your abdomen as possible
  • Watch TV from a distance of 6  feet or greater
  • Avoid use of heating blankets (not a problem in Florida)
  • Keep cell phones away from abdomen, particularly if using a hands free headset
  • Remove or unplug electric devices near your bed
